Serena Knee Injury Ends Williams Sisters' Wimbledon Doubles Reunion
Serena Williams withdrew from the Wimbledon women's doubles on Thursday, forcing her partnership with Venus Williams to end before a single ball was struck in competition. Serena sustained the knee injury during her singles return earlier in the week, and the damage proved too severe to continue. The withdrawal was confirmed via an Instagram post in which Serena described draining fluid from her knee following the singles match and shared images of four syringes as evidence of the procedure.
"I'm heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could but unfortunately my knee just isn't ready to compete," Serena wrote. A video accompanying the post showed her walking with strapping along her right leg. The sisters had been scheduled to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in the first round - a match that had already been pushed back to allow Serena additional recovery time after her singles exit. sports bet netball
Serena, 44, had lost her singles match to 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 on Tuesday. The doubles entry had marked the first time the sisters competed together at Wimbledon since winning the title there in 2016, and their first Grand Slam pairing since the 2022 U.S. Open, where they fell in the first round. As a doubles team, they are six-time Wimbledon champions, 14-time Grand Slam title winners, and three-time Olympic gold medallists - having never lost a Grand Slam doubles final together.
Despite the setback, Serena signalled that her competitive return is not over. "All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you," she wrote, with the U.S. Open on the horizon later this summer. Venus, 46, remains in the singles draw at Wimbledon.
