New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler became the first starter in more than a century to reach 50 strikeouts with fewer than 10 walks, no more than one home run allowed and an ERA under 1.50 through his first nine outings of the 2026 season. The mark, last achieved by Walter Johnson in 1913, came after Schlittler limited the Milwaukee Brewers to two hits over six scoreless innings with six strikeouts on May 9, 2026. The Yankees lost 4-3 in 10 innings despite his effort.

Schlittler entered the start with 59 strikeouts, nine walks, one home run allowed and a 1.35 ERA, according to Opta Stats. He remained in the game after a 108.5 mph line drive struck him in the first inning. Yankees manager Aaron Boone called him a "stud" and "great competitor" who "pitched awesome," via MLB.com.

The Brewers trailed 2-0 when Schlittler departed. Brent Headrick yielded a home run to Jake Bauers, Camilo Doval allowed the tying run and Fernando Cruz gave up the go-ahead runs. William Contreras went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a sacrifice fly in the 10th that scored Luis Rengifo.

Milwaukee improved to 21-16 while New York dropped to 26-14.
