Ilia Malinin of the United States claimed gold in the men's singles at the 2026 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, on March 28, 2026. He scored 218.11 points in the free skate for a total of 329.40, well ahead of Japan's Yuma Kagiyama, who earned silver with 306.67.[1][2]
Shun Sato of Japan took bronze with 288.54 points. Malinin, a 21-year-old American known for landing multiple quadruple jumps and nicknamed the "Quad God," celebrated emphatically after his performance at the O2 Universum arena.[1][3]
One month earlier, at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Italy, Malinin had finished eighth in men's singles after two falls in the free skate, despite entering as a leading favorite.[2][4] Speaking to reporters after his world title win, he reflected bluntly: "I blew it," attributing the Olympic result to mental pressure and overwhelming thoughts before his start.[1]
"The pressure of the Olympics, it's really something different," Malinin said, noting he felt confident entering the world championships free skate but that events unfolded quickly.[1]
Malinin's victory marked his third consecutive world title, following wins in 2024 and 2025. He became the first men's skater to achieve three straight titles since American Nathan Chen in 2018, 2019 and 2021, with the 2020 event canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2][5]
